Providing welcome pairs of extra hands during the second world war, the new nursing division of the Castor and Ailsworth St John Ambulance group. Girls could join from age 11. The group started at the beginning of the war attending functions to provide nursing care if there was an accident or someone fell ill. They also helped in the children's ward at the memorial hospital.


Castor Station looking west towards Wansford. The Station Master's House, which was very close to the line, is on the left. The Peterborough platform is on the right, the brick building next to the level crossing was the booking office with its small shelter.
On 3rd January 1945 a German V1 flying bomb exploded in a field just west of Castor station, which suffered some damage. The station (dating from about 1850) closed to passengers on 1st July 1957 and to goods on 28th December 1964. More about Castor Railway Station
