With your back to the tomb in this clue, you can see the remains of the doorway of the “Dame School”, which preceded the “Fitzwilliam School” (now the Village Hall), for which pupils had to pay 6d a week for “firing” - to provide fuel for keeping the fires going in the school!

“Artis” was an amateur archaeologist who was a steward for Lord Fitzwilliam. He uncovered the Roman Bath House in 1828 which is still under the school field. Rumour has it that he was buried upright in his coffin! John Clare (Helpston poet) often helped him with his digs - Clare’s mother, Anne Stimpson, came from Castor.

This is a picture of the corner shop which you pass - it has had several transformations over the years.

This is where Castor Fire Brigade used to be. There was also a “Reading Room” (see picture) which was used as a boys’ club, for whist drives and a dentist’s surgery (twice a year)!

You can see the timbers of the old tithe barns - everyone complained when they were taken down!

Village Farm is one of the oldest houses in the villages - it was a farmhouse, has a Saxon window and some old mouldings from a church (possibly Castor Church) inside.

The join in the wall is the site of Manor Farm’s crew yard where cattle were kept in winter. In 1947 the farm buildings caught fire and were destroyed. Next door Village Farm was saved.

The Auxiliary Fire Service was based here and two of the men who worked on the farm were trained firemen. Tragically, the fire equipment was taken away form the farm only two months before the fire!

This house was the first police house in the village - the second being 29 Peterborough Road before the present one was built.

The house next door was a nursery with greenhouses across all the neighbouring land. Sadly, the house was gutted by fire and Mrs Kingston was burned to death.

Opposite here was the “Fitzwilliam School” until 1947. Next door was a threshing business.

Behind the “Peterborough Road” sign was a slaughterhouse. The hole beneath was used for threading a rope through so the owner (on the path) could hold the animal while it was slaughtered.
