The Millennium Parade

The Ailsworth Sports field was swarming with history. Roundheads and Cavaliers on horseback, Vikings in longboats, Romans in chariots, Suffragettes on soap boxes, Bill and Ben and Andy Pandy, Postman Pat and cool flower power birds - and many many more of the weird and wonderful inhabitants of the villages gathered for the historic parade.

Mandy Sharpe and her riders prepare to lead the historical charge...

The Rigby family and Ronnie Baker's Viking Longboat invades the villages...

... while the Castor School Roman Chariot follows behind...

... under the protection of the Roman Legion.
Meanwhile, the Castor Brownies gather...
... and are led away by pony and trap.
The Playgroup's historical characters from children's television gather for a photograph...
... but the photographer is distracted by a blast from his past - chicks from the fifties and the seventies.
The Castor WI Suffragettes yell their battle cry of "Votes for Women"...
... as the CASPRA Titanic joins the parade...
... and the crew throw buckets of water over the side in a vain attempt to bail out the doomed vessel.

Crowds have gathered to watch the parade of history...
The butcher watches, glass in hand, while he roasts the hogs for the Medieval feast.

The parade passes the Prince of Wales Feathers...
... and the Fitzwilliam Arms...

... the Village Hall

... St Kyneburgha's...

... the School Field...

... the Royal Oak.
Until the mounted troops lead the way into Splash Lane and down to the Woodlands Leisure Centre.

Denis is last in line.
The Gardeners Club celebrates their floral display with champagne...

... the tennis club play with their balls...

...the seventies chicks laud flower power...
... while the Suffragettes claim victory in the fight for women's rights.
Meanwhile, the Romans attack the Vikings and try to put Ronnie to the sword. Such is the march of history.
Peace is soon declared and the participants make their way back to join the millennium celebrations...
...though some have to drop into one or another of the hostelries to recover from their exertions.
Oh, the joys of village life.
