A bite of history

I remember quite well having a Silver Jubilee party when King George V and Queen Mary had reigned for 25 years in 1935. My father, Reg Glover was the City Counselor and was in charge of the party. I was 8 years old but I remember helping to decorate a barn which was half way up the main street in Ailesworth on the east side. We had red white and blue everything. Lots of food and games for the kids, a sing song, and later a big dance.

The same barn was used in 1937 for the Coronation celebration of King George VI and Queen Elizabeth which was a similar shindig  for the entire village. I was recalling this recently while my wife and I were watching the funeral of Queen Elizabeth, the Queen Mum. I imagine there are lots of folks still in the village who recall these events.

Best Wishes,

Kenneth Wadd Glover, Houston, Texas.

I received the following email. If anyone who is a Barrow Race expert, please contact Dan: danjamall@hotmail.com

Hi,   My name is Dan and I'm from a small town called Kippax, just on the outskirts of Leeds.  My friends and I have a proposed a sports barrow race in September of this year.  I noticed your website and saw the photos of the barrow race - looks like a right laugh!!   We plan to modify our barrows and award style marks for the most interesting barrow modifications.  Also, a number of different  races will be held, a time trial with a standard bag of gravel in the barrow.  A battle mode, though the details of that are tba.  The two man barrow race will also be on the line up at the Yorkshire Sports Barrow Championships.   Do you or the lads have any tips on choosing a barrow and racing.   The lads and I would love to hear from you about this fast growing sport

Cheers, Dan

A Request for help

Mark Scaife of Home Cottage, Holme sent this photograph of Night Owl's Garage. He is not sure of the exact history of the photograph, but believes it to be his mother's uncle Mick Martin, brother of William Martin (Martin's of Stamford) who ran this garage and built a series of cars in the area under the Night Owl name - one of which is pictured in the photograph.

Could anyone could help locate the site of this garage? Any other information would be welcome too.

Ringing in the New Millennium

New Year's eve - and the villagers gather at St Kyneburga's Church to welcome in the new millennium - see the action unfold in the exciting epic - "A year before 2001 - a church oddity"

Ringing in Christmas

On the evening of Monday 20th December the Royal Oak was packed. Les and Sandra were hosting the annual Bell Ringers event. An evening of carols, with a carol sheet provided by Quentin Marks (how to buy and sell houses in the Peterborough area), was interspersed with the atmospheric sound of hand-bells played so wonderfully by the Castor Bell Ringers.

The evening raised £70 for the Bell fund, and even more important, was a really enjoyable evening for all present. Christmas 99 has been rung in - in a style that few communities can witness - thanks to the Royal Oak for their generosity, the Bell Ringers for their wrist action, the live band for their lung capacity, Tony Jones for his sound equipment and the cohorts of drinkers for their hearty singing. (We won't thank Ian Sheldon, he did a lot of the organising as usual, but he was ill so he wasn't there. Ahhhh!)

Bulb Planting

Inspired by Bill Baxter`s vision for a colourful spring in the new millennium, on the weekend of 6/7th November, over 100 residents of Castor and Ailsworth turned out to plant nearly 25,000 daffodil bulbs.

More residents appeared with tea and coffee for the planters turning the event into a real community occasion.

The enthusiasm shown demonstrates the pride people have in the villages as well as the great community spirit which exists here.
