Villiage Names and Locations

 

Gipsey Lane - Is situated on the Helpston Road and is the track on the right going to Helpston leading to White's Wood (the first wood on the right).

Panters Corner - now Prince of Wales corner - Mrs May Panter was once the licensee.

Tween Towns - the road between Ailsworth and Castor through the allotments

The Reading Room - a small corrugated tin hut on Castor Green, once the venue for the Boys Club (Leader Fred (jigger it) Sharpe), Whist Drives, the school dentist etc.

The Hut - slang for Village Memorial Hall, situated on the south of Peterborough Road Castor between Stocks Hill and Splash Lane.

Church Walk - lane from Holme Close to Helpston Road.

Chapel Lane Hill - on the Helpston Road leaving Ailsworth.

Splash - Splash dyke running from Station Road Ailsworth across Splash Lane to the river.

Three Bridges - the three railway arches down Splash Lane.

Ford Green - the stretch of the river bank over the railway crossing to the left, once an ancient ford.

Willow Road - Station Road, Ailsworth, once lined with old willows.

Jim Fox - licensee of the Wheatsheaf, Ailsworth, Publican and Butcher.

Andrews Piece - narrow lane from Stocks Hill to Marholm Road.

Brook Field - second field on right on Marholm Road.

Park Side - on the right on Marholm Road, just beyond Salter's tree**.

Stamford Gate - gate on Marholm Road to Milton Hall.

Tipler Rollins - a wonderful "colourful" character - a shepherd with a horse and trap and a sheep dog that ran between the wheels of the trap.

Love's Hill - Castor Hill.

Phil's Hovel - Brick building (now demolished) near Oldfield Pond once the home of Philip Martin.

Bill Hill's Hovel - on the Marholm Road near Stamford Gate.

Oldfield Pond - situated at the top of Cow Lane on a line with Stamford Gate and Gipsey Lane.

Drift - path from Oldfield recreation ground to Helpston Road. Cow Lane - from Oldfield to Castor village.

Little Dales - small field at the top of Clay Lane.

Eases - Recreation ground, Port Lane.Fields adjoining - Rush Ease and Mantons Ease.

**Salters Tree - site of an ancient tree where a man named Salter was hung for stealing sheep.

Marholm Road - reverted back to original name - Water Lane.
