Castor and Ailsworth Millennium Society

A few words from David Henderson (Chairman) May 2000

The Society was formed in December 1998 following an initiative by the two Parish Councils. It was immediately clear that there was a strong impetus in the Villages to mark the new Millennium by producing something durable and long-lasting as well as events for community participation and enjoyment.

I think we have done just that, with the Photographic Record, Daffodils and Village Web-site being long-term reminders of our efforts. The Celebration Weekend will be a festive affair which I am sure will be enjoyed with true Castor and Ailsworth vigour.

These successes are very rewarding to the organisers who have worked extremely hard over the past 18 months and I would like to express my gratitude to them for all their unstinting support and great efforts over this period.

One of the joys of living in these Villages is the great community spirit and the willingness of people to become involved in village activities. This came to the fore when we planted the daffodil bulbs and is surfacing again as we approach our Celebration Weekend. Many people have come forward to help and many more will participate in the Parade and other events. It is also likely that the majority of residents will enjoy a lot of what we have to offer. It is this kind of participation and reception that make the efforts worthwhile.

I would also like to pay tribute to the Parish councils for their continuing morale-boosting as well as financial support. The Grant we received from the Millennium Festival Aweards For All has also added a great deal to our events this weekend as well as providing invaluable support for the Photographic Project.

Members of the Society: Tracey Blackmore, Bertie Fitzjohn (Treasurer), Bridget and Brian Goode, Steven Grys, Andrew Harrison-Smith, Kath Henderson (Secretary), Les Hill, Mark Smith, Lynne and Ted Thain, Liz Towning, Jo Walker.

2000 - a year to remember ......

The turn of the century was marked in Castor and Ailsworth by many events organised by the Millennium Society and other Village Groups.

One of the first Society's projects was The Year 2000 Calendar depicting scenes from old Castor and Ailsworth. This was soon sold out with many copies reaching friends and relatives around the world.

In November 1999 over 100 residents planted daffodil bulbs which gave us our wonderful spring 2000 display.

The volunteer photographers have been busy photographing residents as part of our Historic Photographic Record.
