WILKO JOHNSON
WILKO JOHNSON (Guitarist / vocals) Norman Watt-Roy (Bass) Steve Monti (Drums)
Wilko was founder, guitarist and songwriter for R&B legends DR. FEELGOOD, who came roaring out of Canvey Island in the early 70s. Wilko's manic: performances and choppy rhythm/lead style became their distinguishing trademark. Four groundbreaking albums, induding 1976 #1 album chart topper 'Stupidity' (which captured them 'live') and several top 40 singles including 'Roxette' taken from the live album put Wilko and the Feelgoods firmly on the 70s rock landscape. In that era of turgid progressive and fey glam-rock, their high-energy dirty R&B and be-suited appearance was a mini-revolution bringing rockn'roll back to the roots and giving inspiration to both the UK and US fledgling punk scenes.
Many of Wilton's compositions, induding "Sneakin' Suspicion', "Beck in the Night' and 'She Does It Right', were top 40 singles and have since become standards. Splitting from the Feelgoods, Wiko formed his own band the Solid Senders and also teamed up with IAN DURY & THE BLOCKHEADS. This association brought a partnership with bass player Norman Watt-Roy. The much-revered bassist is also known for his session work with Frankie Goes To Hollywood on their #1 singtes 'Relax' and 'Two Tribes' and The Clash. He has also played on solo albums by tne Who's Roger Daltrey and the latest album by Ray Davies of the Kinks. He has bean Wilko's foil for the past eighteen years, providing a solid foundation for Wilko to scatter his wild guitar tricks over. Completing the 3-piece on drums is another forner Blockhead, Monti. He cane to prominence witti 90s indie rockers Jesus and Mary Chain, but has also played on albums for everyone from Curve to Sir Tom Jones. He was also producer ard occupied the drum stool on 'Jagged' the critically acclaimed Gary Numan comeback album and also Numan's previous albums Pure and Hybrid.
Wilko is a legend amongst music fans, music critics and other musicians and in the last 12 months has played over 100 sold out gigs in UK, Ireland, Spain. Sweden & Finland. Touring constantly, ho always turns in a crowd-pleasing show.. .make sure you catch Wilko live in Castor!
